Checklist for Evaluating Backlinks

There is a lot of talk when it comes to learning SEO about link relevance, but we don’t hear about the determined value of a link all that often. Let’s look at this.

The value of a link can be bantered about by SEO types but the bottom line is really one of the most basic premises of any website … it’s overall value and worth. If every site and every page were the same, it would not matter where a link comes from. This isn’t the case however. So what makes one link better than another?

When looking for inbound links we evaluate the other site by it’s relevance and subject matter. We want to find good sites, or ones that appear good. We definitely always look for a relevant market where we share some part of our topic so it holds a value of interest for our users. Are there reasons why one page will provide a better link than another?

Here are some factors that a good webmaster with an eye towards making a very valuable web page will be attentive to:

* Keyword in domain name
* When the filename contains the keyword.
*A title tag that contains the keyword.
* Excellent heading tag usage.

Of course, the first step will be to find a page to obtain a backlink from. Before moving forward evaluate the page for the factors. A page that meets these basic SEO rules will provide a valuable backlink. A page that meets these values will have importance in the Google algorithm and will share that importance with any outgoing link from it.

So what else then is there to determine the value of a page to get a link from? Links of course!

  * Links pointing at this site with the same qualifications.

So here we have five ways of judging the value of a link pointing to our site.

I know this makes getting a “good” link a lot more of a chore than it is without meeting these factors but the fact remains … these are things that make for a super valuable inbound link.
